I have personally pressed for the release and humane treatment of many Soviet Jews. including Mr. Viktor Brailorsky. Ida Nudel. Lev Elbert. Anatoly Shcharansky. and Yelena Bonner. Most recently. I have supported Andrei Sakharov. whose condition. is still unknown today. Continued support for these persecuted people is most important. Since 1979. there has been a sharp decline in the number of Jews who have been allowed to emigrate from the Soviet Union. The timing of the prayer and vigil is especially important this year because it coincides with the 14th anniversary of the illfamed Leningrad trials. During this event. 11 Soviet dissidents were tried and imprisoned for speaking out against the Soviet state.
