Session #53 · 1893–95

Speech #530033232

I had already stated that there was no serious objection in my mind to the extension of the time of registration. it not being inconsistent with the purpose of the original act. that the purpose of the act of May 5. 1892. was not the deportation of Chinese. but that that provision for deportation was merely intended to provide a punishment for a violation of the act. My troube had not been because I was unwilling. upon.a proper application from China. to grant an extension of the time for registration. but because I did not like this Government being put in the attitude of voluntarily yielding to the defiant opposition of a class of aliens in this country.
