Speech #520127109

His brightness and industry are sufficiently indicated when it is said that he attained a high reputation in the difficult and la borious profession of stenography. His popularity led to his election as a member of the Michigan State Legislature. and his service there was of so satisfactory a character as to lead the people of the Fifth district. which includes the great manufacturing and commercial city of Grand Rapids. to send him to the House of Representatives. During his first term in that body he attracted the attention of the country to his work in investigating the subject of immigration. Defeated for reelection. after an interval of two years he was again elected to Congress. but died before he could take his seat. The esteem in which he was held by his own party throughout the State was shown by the fact that four years ago he was the caucus nominee of the Democratic members of the Legislature for the office of United States Senator.
