Fords service began with the Fiftieth Congress. Before the close of the first half of his term he had taken a very prominent rank in the House of Representatives. He had been originally appointed on some of the most important committees of that body. and was early in his service placed at the head of a special committee of the House to investigate the question of immigration. to which he had given much attention for several years. I This*committee visited important cities in all parts of the country. acquired a mass of useful information. and made a complete and satisfactory report to the House. His work on this committee and his efforts generally in Congress rendered him very popular in his district.
