Session #52 · 1891–93

Speech #520017195

I do not rise to oppose the passage of this bill. Questions concerning Chinese immigration at the last Congress and at this Congress have been allowed to go without objection to the Committee on Foreign Relations. notwithstanding there is a committee of the Senate on the subject of immigration. I only desire to ask the Senator from Oregon. who is upon the Committee on Foreign Relations. and who has this bill in charge. whether the Senate is to understand that this is the proposition of that committee in reference to Chinese immigration for legislation at the present session. whether they have gone over the whole subject and have reached the conclusion that the best disposition of the subject at this session will be a simple extension of the existing laws?
