Session #51 · 1889–91

Speech #510109041

When accosted by the census enumerators they refused to give their namesprobably under the belief that the system to which they are subject would notallow them to call their souls their own. The amount of liberty which they can claim for themselves in this land of freedom is small indeed. There ought to be no place under our institutions for a system that treats men asof no more account than automatons or brutes. To protect these people against the pauper labor of Europe we impose taxes upon coal. What a mockery! That coating is too thin. it does not disguise the nauseating dose. and the American people will utterly repudiate it and its authors.
