Session #51 · 1889–91

Speech #510103099

If it may override one power of the Federal Constitution. why not another? Why may it not determine against a tariff tax as detrimental to fair dealing and good morals? Why may it not demand that laws regulating immigration should be abrogated in certaiu localities. so that Chinese or contract labor may enter the country? If complaisance to exceptional feeling in particular States is a reason for abridging one of our constitutional powers. why not for every other of them? Why select a single power of the State. which after all is only the legislative power. as the foundation for this exceptional action ?
