Session #50 · 1887–89

Speech #500140672

Mr. Speaker. when this committee was organized it was directed by the House to investigate a question upon which there was absolutely no literature whatever. and no available facts except what might be gleaned from the reports of the Bureau of Statistics in regard to the number of immigrants landing on our shores. We were directed to investigate the alleged violations of the laws of the United States. and I think that no man who is familiar with the labors of that committee could accuse it of any laches. or of any extravagant expenditures. We were in constant session about eight weeks.
