If the signs of the times are correct. this may be the opportunity of all others that we have sought for in the last forty years. to obtain possession of that trade by only doing that which is fair and right and manly. As a Democrat I do not believe that either party can gain any great advantage by this unseemly and hasty action on a great measure that is away above polities. We are all united in restricting this immigration and keeping it from our shores. I do not believe in this contest there is any advantage on either side. But if we go on in the face of the information coming here in response to a resolution of the Senate showing that the treaty is pending. and now for Congress to pass this act in such haste. doing that which has never been done in the history of this country. and which no other civilized nation would think of doing. and that. too. which may make it impossible for this great nation of sixty millions of people to have the benefit of the trade with China. and make it impossible to sell their manufactures to that people. you may close the door which we sent our Navy and diplomat to open.
