In the same session of Congress the very amendment which I had proposed was adopted by the gentleman from California. and the billso amended passed both Houses and became a law. Now. Mr. Speaker. I say that the Chinese Government hasin all respects exhibited the most liberal spirit whenever we have proposed to prevent the immigration of its subjects to this country. There was a very memorable commission created in connection with this Chinese question a few years ago in the Senate of the United States. and at the head of it was the then leader of the Republican party in the Senate.
