He will be remembered as a progressive statesman. who was prompt to recognize the high responsibilities and duties that came in his day upon this nation. He strove to garner the fruits of the war. that coming generations might enjoy the benefits of the heroic sacrifices that were made to save the Government. He was a sincere advocate of the rights of labor. a friend of law and order. and consistently demanded the protection of all American industries from foreign pauper competition. Of his success as a leader in times of peace and in the broad field of true polities I leave others to speak more at length. As has already been well said here today. lie sat in this hall with Thaddeus Stevens.
