Session #49 · 1885–87

Speech #490145080

Whether following the fortunes of his great leader. Stephen A. Douglas. before the war. or battling for the cause of the Union. or as a stalwart Republican in later days. he was always a fearless and vigorous fighter. Many people had emigrated from the South to Southern Illinois who during the early stages of the war bitterly opposed the coercive measures of the North. In their ranks were found many who had been the most active and zealous political friends of General Logan. The sacrifices which at the call of his country sundered these ties of friendship left their ineffaceable impress on his character.
