I was most heartily in favor of the act of which it is amendatory. and I am for any amendment which increases the efficiency of that act. And I agree with the gentleman from Indiana it is best to leave the execution of the act with the officers of the Government of the United States. I have no objection if State boards of immigration and others charged with the duty of looking after immigration are called upon to assist in this work if they will act. in conjunction with the officers of the Government of the United States as provided by the bill. without compensation. But if there are to be specific fees provided and officers employed I see no reason why we should go outside. say in the port of New York. of the thousands of officers we have already there and employ a new corps. We already have a vast number of officers.
