The iron mines referred to by the honorable Senator from Virginia have nearly all of them been discovered as practical fields for enterprise since the enactment of the present tariff. and in consequence of the demand for ores of this description there has been a vast and unexpected increase of the importation of foreign ores. The question now is. What shall we do. as practical men. in the bill before us with a view of protecting American labor against foreign competition from pauper labor? And that is the only question.
