Session #47 · 1881–83

Speech #470037299

Mr. Speaker. I have no sympathy for the man who will stand up here or anywhere and compare these Chinese immigrants to the Gernans or the Irish or any other of the European immigrants who come to these shores. It seems to me that any one who draws a parallel between these classes has read history to little effect. The other sections of the bill provide that any native of China who comes here for the purpose of trade or travel or of engaging in legitimate commerce may do so unrestricted. and shall be entitled to all the rights and privileges accorded to citizens of the most favored nations.
