President. I wish to say but a few words on this amendment. The subject of Chinese immigration has very largely agitated the public mind of the Pacific coast for many years. As has been stated on this floor. there are large numbers of Chinamen on the coast today occupying the positions of artisans in most of the industrial pursuits there. tot e exclusion in a great measure of the white artisans. Twenty years may seem a long time in the life of a man. but it is a very short time in the life of a nation. and especially in the life of a nation that measures its existence by fifty centuries of time.
