Session #47 · 1881–83

Speech #470034196

The Chinese arc the most easily goy. ered race in the world. Yet every Chinaman in America has four hundred and ninetynin Americans to control him. I for one. speaking for the Pacific coast. have reason to be very grateful to the Senator from Massachusetts for allowing the population of Massachusetts to be counted in makin this computation. even though they hear none of the burdens of that immigration. What sort of a omputatiom would he think it was. how fair and hov disingenuous a computation would he regard it. if a great contagion was sweeping over the Pacific States. and it should happen that one in three of the ablebodied population had perished. and that 105.000 had died in a few cities on that coast ? Would he exclaim: Only one hundred and five thousand. what is that ?
