He was a citizen of my State. Judge Hollister. a gentleman of very high character indeed. He correspondedwith the State Department to know what he should do with these people. The Secretary of State. Mr. Seward. advised him to protect them. Our consular agent. Mr. Henry Conard. took into his house from one hundred to three hundred of these people and cared for them.
