Session #45 · 1877–79

Speech #450113343

I am a little inclined to think that I made a mistake in the vote to which attention has been drawn. I am a little inclined to think that if all the Chinamen in our land had the ballot in their hands today we should not have heard a word of this Chinese question here. I think that is a key to a solution of the whole question. I am willing to admit them to naturalization. I think all persons who come here to make their permanent home ought to participate in our Government. ought to be citizens. andought to have theright -of franchise conferred upon them. Ifoted for it once.
