I am familiar with the work of this survey. as much of its labors have been performed in Colorado. and I am justiied io declaring that the results of these surveys have added infinitely more to the revenues of the Governmeut by stimulating immigration and settlement in that region than three times the amount appropriated. Every country of Europe that enjoys a permanent aid stable governmneot has its geological surveys. continues them for years. and prizes the work doune. In France the lirst survey was organized in 1811. in Great Britain in 1835. and both countries have contimnedthem to the present day.
