There every variety of grains ard grasses lourish. and all fruits known to the temperate zone grow abundartly. The climate is the finest on the continent. extreme heat and cold are unknown..the mean temperature being about sixty degrees. never higher than ninetyfive nor lower than twenty. and that dreaded disease. the scourge of more northern clirmrates. consumption. is an entire stranger. There. too. immigrants ate most cordially invited. and will be welcomed with open arms and hIears. But while this is true as to a portion of the public lands in Alabama. it is equally true that the great bulk of these lands are pine forests. too poor for cultivation. and coal lands which cannot be entered and utilized under the provisions of the homestead lav and will there remain a dwellingplace and shelter for wild beasts. wholly worldess forever. noless Congress repeals the act rrohibiting the sale of the same. There are over five thousand square miles of superior bituminous coal lands in Alabama. a large proportion of which is now vacant.
