We have never paused to consider the difference in the people of the two sections. their habits. their civilization. their culture. their religion. Upon the broad ground that our Government was made for all. Christian and heathen alike. and that the ore would as readily conform to it as the other. we have laid no restraints upon immigration. come whence and how it may. The benefits that we have derived from the growth of our European population have blinded us to the possible dangers of an equal population from Asia. Our complaint has been that they did not come sooner. that we were not at an early period of our history admitted to an unrestricted intercourse. commercially ard socially. with the great. nations of Japan ard China.
