Speech #430064126

Tiere would go up sucha demand to Congress for legislation upon this subject as has never been heard before. It is claimed. sir. that free trade would have a tendency to close down tIe various manufactories of the country. and that a tariff for their protection is absolutely necessary. Then if this be true. that you desire to protect the laborers. and are not simply trying to protect the wealthy manufacturer. by inrposiig a tax upon imported articles mtt the expense of the consumer. then in the iame of justice and consistency do something to protect our languishing and starving poor laborers. who have to contend with these Asiatics from whom our people must flee as from a pestilence. I rppeal to the representatives of the people here assembled. whether front the East or West. North or South. who have ever been in sympathy with the toiling masses of the country to do something stow to protect those who are entitled to our sympathy and consideration.
