Speaker. is the darkest side of the picture. and surely such a showiug of misfortune and ignorame appeals to our every setimen of patriotisms. In other sections of the Union. notably in soni of the extreme Eastern States. all this is happily reversed ii the sho wing made by the census. But in several of the Western States. with their population made up so largely of foreigners. a considerable perecitage of ignorauce prevails. giving rooi even there for renewed energy on the part of those States in the cause of education to provide for the everincreasing tide of ignorant children whose parents are emigrants from the O( World. I It will thus be seen that the great necessity for education exists in the southern portionof the Union. that in eight of these States over onehalf of the inhabitants ten years of age and over are ignorant. Such a condition.
