And just as important, the Attorney General
has to be seen by the public--every member of the public from
every community--as a fair arbiter of justice. They conclude:
Unfortunately, there is little in Senator Sessions' record
that demonstrates that he would meet such a standard. They say that his 30-year record of racial insensitivity, bias
against immigrants, and hostility to the protection of civil rights are
among the reasons that they oppose his nomination. The NAACP reached another and a similar conclusion, strongly urging
the Senate to vote no on Jeff Sessions' nomination for Attorney
General. The letter reads, in part:
The Justice Department is a crucial enforcer of civil
rights laws and adviser to the President and Congress on what
can and should be done if those laws are threatened.
