In a cable sent to the U.S. Secretary of State on July 10. 1915. the U.S. Ambassador to the Ottoman Empire confirmed the persecution of Armenians by "systematic attempts to uproot peaceful Armenian populations. and through arbitrary arrests. terrible tortures. wholesale expulsions. and deportations from one end of the empire to other accompanied by frequent instances of rape. pillage. and murder. turning into massacre. to bring destruction and destitution on them." After 101 years of waiting. it is time for our President and the United States Government to recognize this fact and to acknowledge this atrocity as the first genocide of the 21st century. Armenia is an important friend and ally of the United States. and it is critical that we stand with our friends and honestly acknowledge the evil of the Armenian genocide. Mr.
