I rise to talk about the conflict in Syria. and in particular what is happening over the next couple of days and weeks. We know that in the last 4 years. starting in 2011. this conflict has resulted in the deaths of a quarter of a million Syrians. More than 4 million Syrians have fled and registered as refugees in neighboring countries. We are told that 7.6 million Syrian are displaced from their homes within Syria itself. So when you combine those who have fled the country because of the violence and combine that with the number of folks displaced in the country. you have about half the population of Syria.
