Madam Speaker. I rise in support of the Establishing Mandatory Minimums for Illegal Reentry Act. also known as Kates Law. This bill mandates 5year minimum prison sentences for illegal immigrants who return to the U.S. after being deported. It comes in direct response to the murder of Kathryn Steinle in San Francisco by a man who had been deported from the United States five times. Kates Law sends a strong message to any person considering illegal reentry: Come back. and you will face serious consequences. This bill strengthens the rule of law and leaves no room for selective enforcement by the administration for any sanctuary city. Madam Speaker. my deepest condolences go out to Kates family and her loved ones. We cannot undo this tragedy. but we must work to prevent others by securing the border and strictly enforcing the law.
