Long ago. American Indians in the region began to visit what they called Medicine Lake. seeking the healing powers of the mud and mineral water in what we today call Sour Lake. Oil was discovered in 1901 around Sour Lake and quickly became the lifeblood of the area. production later reached 7 million barrels a day. This same discovery allowed for the creation of the Texas Company. better known as Texaco. Today. Hardin County has grown to over 50.000 residents. Immigrants from Ireland. Germany. France. and other countries were drawn to Hardin County for its oil. timber. livestock and agricultural products.
