Mr. Speaker. the people were heard. They were heard on the immigration issue. They were heard on that issue twice in this year. in this legislative year. Mr. Speaker. And that is. even though we had a great number of immigration hearings before the Immigration Subcommittee here in the House of Representatives. and where I am ranking member on the Immigration Subcommittee we listened to dozens and dozens of witnesses that testified across the breadth of this issue of immigration that has been on the front of the minds of the American people. It has been in the front of our minds for the last about 2 years. and it becomes part of debate in every conversation that has to do with American policy. Certainly. being a Member of Congress from the State of Iowa where we are the first in the Nation caucus. we have a number of presidential candidates. both Democrats and Republicans. that are in that State much of the time.
