Session #110 · 2007–09

Speech #1100056883

In fact. according to a recent joint study by the Pew Charitable Trust and Brookings Institute. men in their thirties earned on average 12 percent less in 2004 than their fathers did in 1974. after adjusting for inflation. Incredibly. men today are earning less than their fathers did despite a huge explosion in technology and worker productivity. In addition. it is important to note that over the last 6 years. this country has lost more than 3 million goodpaying manufacturing jobs. Why do I raise that within the context of an immigration bill? I raise that because the argument of all the large corporations that are supporting this legislation is: My goodness. we have a crisis in America. It is that wages are going down.
