Session #110 · 2007–09

Speech #1100054109

So dont tell me you cant find U.S. workers to fill these jobs. In all of these casesconstruction. transportation. manufacturing 80 to 90 percent of them are already U.S. workers. What does immigration do to American workers? One of the points I have made is this is a way of putting downward pressure on wages in our country. This is from Professor George Borjas. John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard. He says. on average. the impact of 1980 through 2000 immigration on U.S. wages. on average. it has reduced wages by about 3.7 percent. 1 dont think there is much question that if you bring in a lot of people through the back door to compete for lowwage jobs. you are going to put downward pressure on wages. That is a fact. Here is an example of my concern and one of the things that persuades me we ought to do better.
