Madam Speaker. like many of my colleagues have mentioned today. my brothers and sisters and I were the grandchildren of immigrants who barely knew English. and the first in our family to go to college. Although my mother was only able to attend school through the 5th grade. she instilled in us the importance of an education. My mother led by example. receiving her GED on her 80th birthday. and all six of us received at least one college degree. And we all worked our way through college. I myself swept floors. She wanted us to have a better life. to be able to provide for our families without constantly worrying and living paycheck to paycheck.
