I rise in support of H.R. 4830. the Border Tunnel Prevention Act of 2006. to prohibit the construction and use of border tunnels for the purposes of smuggling. For over a decade. drug cartels and "coyotes" have used border tunnels to smuggle elicit drugs and illegal immigrants into the United States. Border tunnels range from rudimentary gopher holes to more sophisticated tunnels equipped with electricity. ventilation and even rails for electric carts. These tunnels have been used to penetrate both our northern and southern borders. Fifty tunnels have been discovered along the southwest border since 1990. and 36 of them have been unearthed in just the last 5 years.
