Session #109 · 2005–07

Speech #1090166527

The Senator from Michigan. the Senator from Illinois. and others have also worked with the State Department to ensure that there are humanitarian corridors available to get assistance to those towns and villages in southern Lebanon that have been most heavily hit in terms of civilian casualties. We need resources and funding. We need material. but we also need those humanitarian corridors. I want to specifically speak a little bit about the protective status legislation that I cosponsored with Senator DURBIN and others. This is essential to send the right message to the Lebanese people and to the world that we are not going to send immigrants back into a war zone simply because their immigration status has changed. This is a temporary measure but an absolutely crucial one. It is the right thing to do while the fighting in southern Lebanon rages on.
