I completely agree that recovery is essential. but I am also very interested in ensuring that the contractors doing this recovery are not engaging in criminal violations of health. safety and labor law. At the December hearing on this bill in the Agriculture Committee. I introduced into the record an expose by the Sacramento Bee on the deplorable. and often criminal. conditions to which these H2B and other contract employees are subjected. Some are not paid their full wage. denied safety equipment. or made to live in subhuman conditions because of their H2B guestworker status. Mr. Chairman. that is why I will be holding a briefing tomorrow at 2 p.m. in the Science Committee room on these forest workers and how agencies can improve their oversight of wage and workplace safety violations.
