Session #109 · 2005–07

Speech #1090119600

That is. we have united people from many different backgrounds into one nation based upon the belief in a few ideas. rather than upon race. ancestry. or background. Of all the principles we will be debating in these next 2 weeks. none is more important than that one chosen as our national motto. the one carved in stone above the desk. E pluribus unum: one from many. We are not here dividing sides up on who is proimmigrant and who is antiimmigrant. We are here saying we have 5 important principles we all believe in that unite us as Americans. from rule of law to equal opportunity to E pluribus unum. We are trying to put those together in a sensible way.
