Session #109 · 2005–07

Speech #1090100472

Chairman. I yield myself such time as I may consume. I just want to remind my colleagues that we are a Nation of immigrants and a Nation of laws. I think it is important when we pass legislation that we have a basis. a purpose. I do not think the gentleman can document that anyone who has taken this oath and because they have a dual citizenship that they have been any less a citizen. John F. Kennedy said everywhere immigrants have enriched and strengthened the fabric of American life. I think this oath stands on its own merits. and. frankly. I believe that we jeopardize our friends. those who have come to this country with good intentions. when we cause them to have to be reported to their embassy and jeopardize their families lives.
