Survivors of torture arriving in this country indude students. academicians. religious leaders and political activists. Programs funded through the Torture Victims Relief Act help torture victims heal and rebuild their lives. Because of this legislation. more than 30 organizations in more than 20 States are caring for refugees and asylum seekers who have been brutally tortured and traumatized in their countries of origin. Torture treatment programs funded by the Torture Victims Relief Act provide critical medical care. mental health care. and social services. I am proud that one of the leading centers in the United States. the Bellevue/NYU Program for Survivors of Torture. is located in my district.
