Session #105 · 1997–99

Speech #1050203623

We proposed new education performance standards and measures. We are asking for legislation that ensures that children. and listen to this. that they develop print and numeracy awareness. that they understand and use oral language to communicate for different purposes. they understand and use increasingly complex and varied vocabulary. they develop and demonstrate an appreciation for books. and in the case of non English speaking children. progress towards acquisition of the English language. I think back to my grandparents. all of whom were immigrants. If their children had gone to public schools and they had not been given the opportunities we are talking about here and the exposure. if we had put them into another immigrant or minority setting. if we had not exposed them to the language skills. if we had not given them the opportunity to learn English. where would my parents and others in my family have gone? So. we have lost track of where we wanted to go with this program. We. as Republicans. want to bring accountability.
