Session #105 · 1997–99

Speech #1050201169

Those were the days when we were required to have a poll tax and had to pay in order to participate in the elections. HENRY B. GONZALEZ was an extraordinary man. We know him as the man who stands his ground. who does not shy away from dispute. who holds fast to his values. In so many ways Congressman GONZALEZS life represents the American dream. His parents were immigrants from Mexico who fled the violence in the 1911 revolution in Mexico. He worked hard and obtained a college degree and. as my colleagues recall. it is even difficult now for Hispanics to be able to get a degree. At that time. it was more extraordinary because he did it so many years ago.
