Session #105 · 1997–99

Speech #1050179035

As the chairman and the ranking member have pointed out. the Juvenile Crime Prevention Program is funded at $295 million and the community COPS Program is fully funded. As several Members have pointed out. the methamphetamine problem in our country is growing. and we have dedicated $30 million to fight that battle. We have also provided a new program and incentive to decrease the backlog in the naturalization process in our country. Most important for California. we have provided $585 million in funding for the State Criminal Alien Assistance Program. the same level as last year. but $85 million above the budget request. These are good programs. but when we look at the bill and we see that we are going to continue to have a deficit in the way we fund the Census Bureau. when we look at Legal Services and EEOC. as we move along.
