Session #105 · 1997–99

Speech #1050176171

Mr. President. thank you for bringing the Senate to order. This is an amendment that would simply deny visas and travel to those in the Chinese Government who the Secretary of State finds. by credible evidence. are involved in either forced abortions or religious persecution. It is not MFN. it is not IMF. it is not sanctions. but it would deny visas. China denies these practices are taking place. If that is the case. there would be no obstruction at all in diplomatic relations. We provide in the amendment. and I hope everybody will look closely at the amendment. a Presidential waiver if it is in the national interest.
