Speech #1050127304

April 24th. 1915. is solemnly recalled by the people of Armenia and ArmenianAmericans as the beginning of a longterm. organized deprivation and relocation of a people from their homeland. Eightythree years later. we mark this date to remember the beginning of this systematic elimination of Armenian civilians. which lasted for over seven years. By 1923. 1.5 million Armenians had been massacred and 500.000 more deported. Thousands of ArmenianAmericans reside in my congressional district. and each year they mark this date to commemorate this anniversary and remember those who were lost. April 24th. 1915. marked a day when thousands of Armenian intellectual. religious and political leaders were arrested in Constantinople and deported or murdered. Today. we reflect on the massive destruction of property. freedom and dignity of those Armenians who were deported or killed under the Ottoman empire. We honor their memory and vow that such deprivation will never happen again. Mr.
