Session #105 · 1997–99

Speech #1050107331

As many Members of Congress know. two employees of the Legislative Resource Center were fired by Chairman WILLIAM THOMAS because of their alleged mishandling of the Social Security numbers of employees of the House of Representatives. If it is wrong for Congress to make the Social Security numbers of its employees public. it is wrong for states and municipalities to do the same. This legislation does nothing to ensure that naturalized citizens or U.S. born citizens will not be discriminated against. As an African American. I cannot recount the number of times that I felt the sting of discrimination or prejudice because I did not fit someones mindset of what an "American" looked like.
