Session #105 · 1997–99

Speech #1050107239

Mr. Speaker. I rise in opposition to H.R. 1428. I rise in strong opposition to H.R. 1428. the Voter Eligibility Verification Act. This bill is designed to undermine the voter turnout of our countrys naturalized citizens. How does this bill achieve this goal? H.R. 1428 allows local and state election officials to pull anyones name and submit it to either INS or to the Social Security Administration for verification of citizenship. If the name can not be confirmed by either agency. this bill will force the voter to provide citizenship verification to the local voter registrar. Therefore if my name could not be confirmed.
