Session #105 · 1997–99

Speech #1050097073

This bill has also been described as a symbol to that effect. and that is also a worthy goal. And if the bill were to stop with its first section in which the Congress expresses its sense to that effect. this would be a worthy bill. but the bill fails to do so. and in failing to do so. it has two critical flaws which must lead me to speak in opposition to the bill. The first is that this bill has as one of its central provisions to deny visas to those individuals who are thought to be associated with organizations inside China that are engaging in religious persecution. On the surface. this might have some appeal to suggest that we are going to keep these folks with whom we violently disagree outside our borders. But think about it for a minute.
