Session #105 · 1997–99

Speech #1050064271

The point has been raised that the gentlewoman from California won the election fair and square. We have not in any way said that she had cheated in the election. We are simply trying to determine if noncitizens voted in the election. and that would be illegal if they did. But we are not saying that she instigated this in any way whatsoever. I also point out that my parents were immigrants. I grew up in an immigrant culture in a small town in Minnesota where a majority of people were immigrants. I would also point out that this Congress. the Republican majority. seated the gentlewoman from California . which is a practice not followed by the Democrats in the case of a famous election in 1984 when they did not seat Mr. McIntyre and eventually denied him a seat on very poor grounds. and seated his opponent.
