In the welfare bill that we passed. $55 billion of cuts disproportionately hurt legal immigrantsnot illegalmany of them elderly. many of them living alone. many of them with a combined income of $525 a monthall their Federal assistance was eliminated. Only part of it was restored. And the other major area that suffered was in food nutrition programsthe vast majority of the cuts in the welfare reform bill passed last Congress were in the Food Stamp Program.
