CARL LEVIN has been active on this issue and has contacted Secretary Babbitt asking for some assistance. The Secretarys reply. dated June 9. 1997 states: "no formal plan exists" for the project. By way of comparison I should inform my colleagues that. currently there is a photographic exhibit of the history of ItalianAmerican immigrants being displayed a Ellis Island in cooperation with the Italian government. The Balch Foundation. which has compiled millions of immigration record for the National Archives. agreed to create a database of approximately halfamillion Italian American records for use in conjunction with the photographs. The time that it took the Balch Foundation from its first contact by the Italian Government to the installation of the database at Ellis Island for use in the exhibit was approximately 2 weeks. For millions of our Nations citizens the search for their roots brings them to Ellis Island.
